Saying that he has given Sir Elijah Impey a letter of introduction to him; reporting that he had recently seen Mr. Addington and how pleased he was with him; commenting on the Congress at Amiens; commenting that he's heard that the society in Paris "is not very brilliant;" relating news of Parliament's voting to reduce the size of the Army; saying that he has "written to request the King will allow me to retire & to resume my Command if the Peace does not take place -- Whenever the Country is in Danger or there is any Prospect of actual Service my anxious wish is to be employed, but when Peace is certain, I cannot receive a large Pay & burthen the Country to do nothing!"
