Summary
Acknowledging receipt of his letter informing him of the death of General Mathews of the 62nd Regiment and requesting his "interference either with the King, or the Commander in Chief, to obtain your nomination to be his successor in that situation;" saying that he has "never been upon that footing with the King, to warrant my interference with him upon this or any similar military appointment, indeed I might add, upon any appointment whatsoever, whether civil or military, and I apprehend you must be sufficiently aware of the sort of terms on which the Commander in Chief and myself are, not to wonder when I say, that it is very repugnant to my feelings to address any solicitation to him, by whom they are seldom or ever attended to when coming from me;" apologizing that he cannot help him but "let me advise you instantly to write to the Commander in Chief such a letter as can be shown the King and to press him to lay your humble pretensions at His Majesty's feet. This I say because I know that the Duke of York makes a rule of laying all such applications before the King and that I do not think he dares interfere at all in the giving away of Regiments."
