Summary
Acknowledging receipt of his letter and his request on behalf of his son Edward for a posting at High Wycombe; saying he is unable to help because he made "an application of a similar nature in favor of an officer under very similar circumstances when it was positively refused on the grounds of his Regiment being on active Service;" referring to the death of Mr. [Spencer] Percival [sic], saying that it "has given rise to no material change in administration & I am of course left a Private character as before & [illegible] no probability of any present change; But as my heart tells me I do not merit the neglect I experience I bear up with fortitude against it & trust that a period will arrive sooner or later when my earnest desire to show myself an active and zealous friend of my Country will be received as sought & I should be brought from my place of retirement to take a share in these important times which are carrying forward on the Continent;" adding, in a postscript, that he is recommending him for "removal to Calcutta;" adding in a second post script dated May 24, that he has seen his son and that since his son has asked for some time to recover, "I shall not immediately commence my exertions to get him into High Wycombe."
