Expressing his condolences on the death of Mrs. Wetherall; discussing the educational prospects for Wetherall's younger sons and daughters; discussing his own ambitions saying "...for my own part, the first of my wishes would be to return to Gibraltar, and to have the supreme Command of the Army in the Mediterranean annexed to the Government, & if that cannot be accomplished, to go out either to the Cape or to India, provided I could have united in me the supreme civil & military Command; but most probably none of my wishes will be accomplished;" adding, in a postscript, the news of the death of Mr. Rainsford and discussing troop levels at the Cape and troop requirements for India.
