Summary
Thanking him for his kind letter; assuring him of his stand on the "contest for conservative or Catholic principles, such as you so valiantly waged almost single-handed in 1862 or such as you left to the devices & disgraces of the House in 1866. What a subject is it for thankfulness to God that so large a proportion of the Bishops recently elected are Catholic minded men. And some of the 28 I learn are heartily ashamed of being of that number........I think of this whole business & may your valuable life be spared to witness the triumphant vindication of the principles you have so ably expounded."
