Summary
Expressing his satisfaction at how well his Circular was received in the North; expressing hope that it may be a sign that good relations may again be restored; expressing concern that if matters are pressed prematurely, it "might hinder instead of helping the most desirable settlement;" suggesting he read the Pastoral Letter of 1862; saying "I think it will render very apparent to your mind when and how the great difficulty to be disposed of originated. It virtually excommunicated the Church in the South. We have borne the harsh sentence in silence nor can we speak as we would till the amend is made. This much I say, not for the public, but for you and other likeminded, that there may be a perfect understanding."
