Summary
Concerning the reconciliation with the southern dioceses; saying "I could not possibly have signed your proposed joint letter, since the evidence before me is overwhelming that Gen'l Polk and Bp. Elliott were just as much 'the head and front of the offending' as Davis, or Yancey or Floyd or Benjamin. I could and did in my Address to Convention express my earnest desire that they might return, and might be received in a right spirit."
