Part of a 12-volume collection of Autographs and Manuscripts of Bishops of The Protestant Episcopal Church (MA 364-375). The arrangement of the collection is by Bishops in the order of their consecration and chronological within their portion of the collection. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
The convention of the Diocese of Kentucky was held in June 1831 and it was at this time that Rev. Smith was elected Bishop, however, questions surrounded the validity of the election with respect to the eligibility of the electors.

Concerning the procedural issues and controversy that surrounded his election as Bishop of Kentucky; asking for his help; saying "But for the peace of the church, and on account of the feelings of the clergy & laity of Kentucky, I do feel distressed. And do earnestly beg the interposition of your friendly office, to prevent pertinacity and lasting unkindness."
