Summary
Replying to his request to comment on the "meaning of the Rubric in the Communion Office;" discussing, at length and in great detail, the historical precedents for the correct physical placement of the communion table in the church and the physical position of the priest relative to the table and to the congregation; affirming his position that the altar needs to be moved away from the back wall so that the priest may stand behind it and face the people; saying he has not written publicly on this subject as he is identified with the "open contest against Romanizing;"adding "Whether I shall live to see this madness of party spirit pass entirely away, I know not, but for the sake of truth and charity, it is my hope and prayer that the bitterness which still remains may be soon effectually neutralized by a purer and a higher principle."
