Summary:

Thanking him for his congratulations, his support and his encouragement; saying "Whatever the world may think of this business, I am confident that you, my bro, know me too well not to believe that my acceptance of the Bishoprick of N.C. has cost me & my family a mighty effort at self denial. I do not pride myself upon high attainments in this christian grace--but in the present instance I have been called upon to take a long & most difficult step in its rugged path;" congratulating him in his "new and important relation to the church. The position you are about to occupy is one of high & almost unparalleled importance to the welfare of our Zion in these parts and you will not think me [illegible] when I say that you appear to me to be the well-selected soldier for that..."
