Summary
Taking exception to a passage in his book which describes him [Meade] as "the acknowledged head of the Evangelical party in our Church;" writing, at length, why that description is not accurate; writing of "Low Churchmen" he says "As to those with whom I usually act I believe there never were a more independent set of men who might be said to belong to a party there are but few who would agree to be considered as belonging to a party--how many I know not;" referring to Dr. Henshaw and Bishop McIlvaine as possible leaders and saying that Bishop Doane "might have been, except that he was rotten to the core and his sympathizers were ashamed to acknowledge him;" adding, in a postscript, written above the salutation on page 1, that "We are reading your book in the family every night & are much instructed in it & not without edification."
