Summary
The letter is written to George Brown, Hemingway's New York-based boxing coach. Hemingway describes a boisterous visit from the Brooklyn Dodgers to his home in Cuba, during which he sparred with Hughey Casey, a pitcher for the team. Hemingway informs Brown that his wife, Marty [i.e., Martha Gellhorn], "is still very sore about it on account of it taking place in the living room which it seems took a lot of trouble to construct and maintain and will perhaps never be quite so good again." Hemingway reports that he broke his toe during one of the five one-minute bouts. Hemingway reports on his social life, general health and fitness regimen, boxing, and visits with his sons. He also writes about Gellhorn's health and weight, and that "it is hard on her to be blocked out of this war through a rule of no women war correspondents."
