The poem was accepted by John Morley for publication in the Fortnightly Review (for April 1869) and possibly by James T. Fields for the Atlantic Monthly, but it was not printed in either periodical. The text first appeared in print, slightly altered, in Whitman's Passage to India (1871).

Summary
A three-stanza (25 lines) poem later slightly altered and incorporated as part five of his Passage to India (1871).
