Summary:

Relating news from his brother on the Hastings matter; quoting his brother's letter saying "I don't think there has ever been a charge of evil conduct yet publickly exhibited against Hastings; if so, why should he be removed? From the months I have heard speak, his character stands high; I have never once heard him lessened. If we shoot at the Great we ought to be sure of our mark......Our affairs in Europe and America go on much better than they did; and I hope we shall get out of all our difficulties."

Provenance:
By descent to his eldest granddaughter Miss Francis, and in her possession in 1871; sale (London, Sotheby's, 27 November 1897); purchased by Pierpont Morgan from the London dealer J. Pearson & Co., 1901.
