The ledger was begun by Manet working from one side of the volume; the ledger was then flipped and the signatures at the funeral start from the other side.
Contains: 1) several drafts, in Manet's hand, of a response to an exhibition held at the Palais des Champs-Élysées from September 15 to October 31 of works created by French and foreign artists since May 1, 1878 -- artists referenced by Manet include [William Adolphe] Bouguereau, [Jules] Lefebvre, [Alexandre] Cabanel, and [Jean-Léon] Gérôme; 2) numerous calculations, lists of figures, and accounts, including those related to land owned by the Manet family; 3) several pages of text and figures regarding a lottery; 4) a list, in pencil and crossed out, of friends and colleagues, including Théodore Duret, Antonin Proust, and Émile Zola; and 5) eight pages of signatures of the attendees at Manet's funeral on May 3, 1883 -- individuals whose signatures are present include Stéphane Mallarmé, Camille Pissarro, Nadar, Auguste Renoir, and many others.
