The author of the letter is Jane Austen's grand nephew, Edward Knatchbull-Hugessen, 1st Baron Brabourne.
This letter is in the original binding from which the "Lady Susan" manuscript has been disbound (MA 1226).
Provenance
Purchased from James F. Drake in 1947; the manuscript was presented to Fanny Knight (Lady Knatchbull), from whose family it passed (1891) to the Earl of Roseberry; at the sale of his library (Sotheby, 26 June 1933) it was acquired by Walter M. Hill; the Morgan Library purchased it in 1947 from James F. Drake.

Appearing to be written to a bookseller; informing him that he has an autograph letter by Jane Austen that he is willing to sell; expressing his intention to sell the fair copy of the manuscript of "Lady Susan" at auction "at Sothebys in April or May" unless he can get a better offer for it privately.
