Apologizing for the length of time since her last letter, describing her sadness but resolving that she must "try to compose myself;" remarking sadly on the sudden recent death of her daughter-in-law Mattie (wife of her son Jeff), reporting her granddaughter's reaction to the death, and mentioning Jeff's intention to send the girl to board at the Buckley's house. Mentioning the numbers of letters she has received from New York inquiring after Walt, upon reading of his stroke in the papers.
