Summary
Thanking her for letters and asking news about several mutual acquaintances including Mr. Arnold; responding to Price's account of her daughter Emma's desire to come to Washington to nurse injured soldiers by remarking that "it is a dreadful thing" and describing the "sad condition in which many of the men are brought here" and the neglect they suffered in the field hospitals. Asking after her health, regretting that it is not "rugged." Describing his work in the hospitals and the wounded soldiers he visits daily; remarking . Continuing the letter On October 15: Apologizing for not having sent his letter [of Oct. 11], noting they have been inundated with new arrivals of sick and wounded soldiers; describing his attachment to the wounded and asking her to let him know if she meets anyone who would like to contribute monetarily to their comfort and needs; mentioning some friends he has made and wondering about the state of the war on the front, noting that he believes fully in Lincoln.
