Notes
Dating: The first journal section can be dated to 1789 based on the contents of the entries; the second section contains a reference to his election to the Académie Française, which occurred in 1803. Volney toured the United States from 1795-1798; see his Tableau du climat et du sol des États-Unis (1803).
Notes on American domestic architecture and Carver's Three years' travels... (sections 10 and 11) are housed together in pink paper wrappers.

The manuscript is comprised of eleven distinct sections including: journal entries containing accounts of his participation in the États généraux in 1789 (section 1); autograph manuscript accounts of his extensive travels in the United States (sections 2-5); and autograph notes on North America including summaries and extracts from several published works (sections 6-11). The manuscript is written on several different stocks of paper of varying sizes (most ca. 20 cm); some portions are loose sheets, some are bifolium, and some are sewn into gatherings.
