Discussing the Eastern Question and referring specifically to [the Oriental Crisis of 1840], noting that peace cannot be established until Muhammad Ali is "turned out of Syria." Discussing the involvement of France and England, remarking that if the nations respect each other they are strong enough to preserve the peace in Europe, but if they quarrel it will "deluge the world in blood." Referring to Russia, noting "she can and she will betray everybody in turn, if it should suit her purpose."
