This extract is from a letter written by Walpole to the Rev. William Mason on November 8, 1783. Mary Berry has added a "Note" to this extract, on page 4 and printed her Note above the text of the extract and beneath the Epitaph in question in "The Works of Horatio Walpole, Earl of Orford" cited below. Miss Berry's note defends Walpole's intent.
