Praising Agnes and her sister Mary; regretting that he can give no news from France, but that the explosion at Besançon was an accident and that the death of the Abbess of Montmarte was a false report; relating an anecdote about determining the authorship of a pamphlet; mentioning a story he heard concerning the King of Spain considering sending 40,000 troops to France; fearing that "the flame does seem to be spreading," noting that revolution may come next to Austrian Flanders; saying he is shocked by the caricatures in the press regarding the flight of émigrés from France; noting he has seen very little of the Pepyses and Mrs. Anderson lately; saying he has made inquiries about a house in Teddington for the Berrys.
