Notes
Part of a collection of letters from James Thomson to Miss Elizabeth Young. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection level record for more information.
The letter is simply dated 'Monday Morning', however, Thomson refers to his rebuffed invitation to walk with her "on Saturday or Sunday next" extended in his previous letter (MA 1575.5) which was dated May 26, 1743. In 1743, May 26th was a Sunday; the following Saturday or Sunday would have been June 1 or June 2 which would make the possible date of this letter June 3, 1743.
Provenance
Gift of the Fellows of The Pierpont Morgan Library, 1954.
Summary
Addressing her as "Unkind, yet ever dearest Miss Young;" expressing his displeasure that she did not accept his invitation to walk with him and imploring her to give him an "opportunity of talking with you before you go to Town, if you will not settle my Mind into some Peace and Harmony, I am the most miserable Man alive, as the most in Love;" adding that if she does not "take Compassion on me, then conclude me lost, undone. I shall not be able to support it, I shall dy with excessive Love;" inviting her to walk with him that evening.
