Samuel Lucas, Editor of "Once a Week" accused the Cornhill of trying to recruit its contributors; "Once a Week" was published by Bradbury & Evans.
Thackeray has crossed through a portion of the letter on p. 2 in which he offers to take on the quarrel himself and settle it "between me & L."
The letter is dated "Tuesday"; the complete date of writing is from the published letter.
Written from 36 Onslow Square on stationery embossed with the Cornhill Magazine crest.
