Collection of engravings from the Thackeray-Brookfield correspondence, 19th century.

Collection contains Thackeray's printed calling card with autograph additions and three drawings of Thackeray by F. Reason. Collection also contains of 124 engravings that were acquired as part of the Thackeray-Brookfield correspondence (MA 469 and MA 470). Engravings include portraits of prominent literary figures, including Bulwer Lytton, Jonathan Swift, Charles Kingsley, Henry Fielding, Alexandre Dumas, W.H. Ainsworth, Robert Burns, Charles Dickens, Charles Lamb, William Wordsworth, Thomas Carlyle, and others; as well as portraits of actresses Adelaide Kemble and Jenny Lind. Engravings also include portraits of political, historical and philanthropic figures, including George Washington, George II, George III, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Winfield Scott, Wellington, Palmerston, Gladstone and Angela Burdett-Coutts; as well as figures related to the Thackeray-Brookfield correspondence, including Jane Octavia Brookfield and Henry Hallam. Engravings also include views of several locations, including places that Thackeray visited (Venice, Heidelberg, Rome, Paris, and various American cities including New York, etc.) and other views of American cities that he did not visit (Cincinnati, New Orleans). The calling card and drawings have been cataloged separately in four related records; the engravings have been briefly described in a list that is available in the collection files.
