Saying he has returned but without any manuscript for the proposed "Book of Travels;" saying that he had "nothing to say about the places I visited wh[ich] would be likely to advance my reputation or your interests--and we must think of some other little book in place of that one wh[ich] I owe you; asking for the proofs of Esmond; adding that he plans to prepare "4 or 5 extra lectures" prior to his trip to America and he hopes that while he is in the "States to make a book not funny but &c &c--and worthy of a good publisher."
