Summary
Reporting that his daughters are ill with scarlet fever. Discussing the publication of the monthly numbers [of The Newcomes] and remarking on how busy he has been with this work and the Christmas book and wishing he was at home. Noting that "To be father and mother is too much work for any one: let alone such a lazy fellow as me." With a postscript noting that the Doctor has just given a "fair report" of his daughters but that he instructed them to rest for three more weeks and remarking that they are staying in "one of the most xpensive hotels in Europe: ------ !"
