Summary
Reporting that he had intended to set off tomorrow [from Paris to return to London] but that illness has kept him back; remarking that he is feeling better and intends to dine out and visit a cabaret even though he is still exhausted; mentioning his work on Pendennis and noting that he is invited to a wedding the following day. Continuing the letter on Tuesday: mentioning his work on Pendennis, hoping to bring a great part of it home with him later in the week; mentioning that he visited the theater that night and is now very tired. Remarking that he nearly regrets leaving because he will have the pleasure of seeing her only for a few days before the Brookfields leave for Clevedon, but hoping that she enjoys a pleasant spring there. Mentioning that there is talk of another revolution in France, but that he will be back in England before it begins. Noting that he has begun another letter to her, but that he plans to burn it because "it was written in so gloomy and egotistical a strain." Continued with a brief note on Wednesday: reporting that he is well and intends to depart on Saturday.
