Summary
Describing his meeting with Jules Janin that day, noting he has "a magnificent jolly intelligent face such as would suit Pan." Remarking that he had a long talk with a young woman the previous day and relaying some gossip; noting that he did not fall in love with her because they were brought up together. Continuing the letter on Tuesday: noting that his letter was interrupted the previous evening as friends came to visit him and remarking on the coquetry of his cousin. Reporting that he dined again on mock-turtle soup and attended a ball; describing other attendants there. Noting that he also visited his and William's old friend Bowes; intending to attend a lecture on Burns. Recalling his time in Paris thirteen years before "just after I was ruined and before I fell in love and took to marriage and writing." Mentioning that he couldn't find the lecture and so visited the Louvre instead; remarking on the grandeur of the Venus of Milo and mentioning the colors of the Titian pictures and some other paintings. Describing a drive with his cousin, noting she was worth coming to Paris for.
