Describing a party at the house of his mother's friend Madame Colmache, at which he tried to cheer up Mme. Ancelot and remarking on how "women with those melancholy eyes & sad sad looks are not always so melancholy as they seem." Mildly complaining about all of the tea parties that he is required to go to; mentioning that his cousin Charlotte has had a relapse of rheumatic fever; wishing she would write him; remarking "If some folks letters were published as some folks dread after my & some folks' death -- I think Posterity would smile rather. I would if I were Posterity." Remarking on his daughter's affection for her Grandmother, and noting that Anny wants to go to school. Asking if they may visit their Aunt Jane on Sundays, since the school is close to the Brookfield's home. Mentioning mutual acquaintances and social engagements and remarking on his idle lifestyle.
