Summary
Referring to the "fateful night of the Literary Fund disaster," remarking that he returned home to find his mother, who praised his speech. Recalling that Sir Charles Hedges briefly appeared somewhere in the middle of the speech, and gently poking fun at himself. Describing his social engagements: noting that he lunched with [Mrs. Elliot and Miss Perry] the day before and visited an old school-fellow who was "the same man I remember only grown coarser and stale somehow." Remarking that the meeting was painful and recalling that he worshiped this man in his youth. Noting that he then went on to dine with Alfred Montgomery and his family and that he is now going to work on Pendennis. Mentioning mutual acquaintances including Bulwer Lytton and asking her to dine on the 28th or 30th.
