Summary
Saying he is sorry that she wrote to him so "tristely," but remarking that he prefers this to "sham-gaiety." Complaining about his busy schedule and listing all of his social engagements, but remarking that many people would give their ears or half their incomes for such engagements. Describing a dinner at which several ladies asked him about the fashionable world, to which he could only respond that he was a man and to him all ladies were simply ladies. Mentioning several other mutual acquaintances including Peel, Carlyle, Hallam, etc.
