Summary
Written over four days. Tuesday: mentioning that he dined with Mr. Morier and has been writing a letter to Carlyle. Wednesday: describing his dining engagement with Dr. Hall and attending Mr. Sortain's lecture; mentioning that he returned from the evening and has been since wondering what she is doing; musing on the future and on fate. Thursday: remarking that he read about Longueville Jones in the paper and noting that he has sent a letter to Lady Ashburton that morning, hoping that he has not said too much about Jane in it. With a postscript discussing William Brookfield's dislike of Thackeray's extensive correspondence with his wife and remarking "I am only to write occasionally to you ... dignified and quite proper." The postscript is continued on Friday: thanking her for her letter and remarking on the "grand frosty sunshine;" noting that he returns to London the following day and hoping to see her soon.
