Notes
Date of writing identified by Ray, who notes that Mrs. Brookfield assigned it to 1847 but that Thackeray's intimate tone and reference to Major Carmichael-Smyth (who stayed with Thackeray in London in November 1848) indicate that the letter dates to 1848.
Part of a collection of letters primarily from William Makepeace Thackeray to Jane Octavia Brookfield. Letters in the collection have been described individually; see related collection-level record for more information.

Summary
Concerning A. Hawyard's note to Thackeray, in which he thanks him [for a drawing] and remarks that he has "completely beaten Dickens out of the inner circle already;" remarking on the hilarity of this note (which is written on 2 p. following Thackeray's letter). With a postscript asking her to clarify to her cousin that it is Miss Justice Wightman and not Miss Justice Wigram that is attached to Thackeray.
