In his introduction to this letter in the publication listed below, Wilbur L. Cross indicates that he believes the letter was written in 1767 and says that the "superscription, which Sterne tried to blot out with his pen, is "Coxwould, June 18"; Mrs. Draper was sailing to India to be with her husband.

The letter is addressed to "my dear Bramine" and signed "The Bramin", terms of affection Sterne and Mrs. Draper had for one another; soon after they met Sterne referred to Mrs. Draper as Eliza and she called him Bramin, "the source of all wisdom."
