This transmission is not dated and the ship is not specified, however, we know that Steinbeck was assigned as a temporary war correspondent, affiliated with the New York Herald Tribune, to the U.S.S. Knight (DD-633) at this time and the details of the radio transmission correspond to the ship's history of its operations during the six-day period between September 8 and September 13 and the efforts of the U.S.S. Knight to support the capture of German and Italian troops occupying Ventotene Island, and in Salerno Bay to support the capture of Axis Forces occupying Capri; included in this collection are copies of the Terms of Surrender of Ventotene and Capri.
