Summary
Explaining that his statement was in error but that he cannot find the source material on which he relied; saying he will correct the error if "Murray ever means to print my last volume in octavo;" commenting that "I see no way out of the dangers into which a demented government has brought us, but this is far from making me respond. Formerly it was possible to see some way before us, when man acted upon known & assignable views, & public affairs held their ordinary course. It is no longer so; Who can tell where a ship is going when she is steered by the vane instead of the compass? Assuredly it is not by man's wisdom that we shall now be saved."
