Notes
A penciled notation below this letter indicates that "the words 'answered July 11th" (1818), which are written at the top of this letter, are in the autograph of John Wilson Croker.
According to a note, bound with the letters, written on The Pierpont Morgan Library letterhead by Mr. Hill Shine in 1945, the attribution of the date of this letter by a dealer in his catalog is incorrect; the dealer claims the collection begins in July 1811, but evidence related by Mr. Shine indicates that the year of writing for this letter is 1818 and this letter should directly precede the letter dated 10 August 1818 (MA 1005.13) as it thanks Croker for having furnished 'ammunition again Brougham;" an additional, undated note by Edgar Johnson, indicates that the paper is watermarked 1814.
Part of a collection of letters from Robert Southey to John Wilson Croker. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.

Purchased by J.P. Morgan, Jr. from E.H. Wells in 1924.
