Notes
Alfred Hunt, Margaret Hunt, John Simon and William Cowper-Temple organized a subscription for the purchase of J. M. W. Turner's watercolour "Pass of the Splügen" for John Ruskin in 1878. This tribute was in celebration of his recovery from a long period of mental illness.
By comparison with other letters written by her, it is possible that this letter was written by Margaret Hunt.
J. M. W. Turner's "Pass of the Splügen" is now in a private collection.
Part of a large collection of letters to Joan Severn. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
This collection was part of Helen Gill Viljoen's large bequest of John Ruskin-related material (formerly MA 3451).
Year of writing inferred from contents of the fragment; month of writing most likely April or May.
