Notes
Alfred Hunt, Margaret Hunt, John Simon and William Cowper-Temple organized a subscription for the purchase of J. M. W. Turner's watercolour "Pass of the Splügen" for John Ruskin in 1878. This tribute was in celebration of his recovery from a long period of mental illness.
J. M. W. Turner's "Pass of the Splügen" is now in a private collection.
Part of a large collection of letters to Joan Severn. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
The letter is signed "Belle" and refers to the contribution coming with "Naf's and my love"; Isabel Naftel was married to Paul Jacob Naftel and is the mother of Maude Naftel.
The year of writing is inferred from the contents of the letter; the month is most likely April or May.
This collection was part of Helen Gill Viljoen's large bequest of John Ruskin-related material (formerly MA 3451).
Written on stationery embossed "4, S. Stephen Square, / Westbourne Park."
