Alfred Hunt, Margaret Hunt, John Simon and William Cowper-Temple organized a subscription for the purchase of J. M. W. Turner's watercolour "Pass of the Splügen" for John Ruskin in 1878. This tribute was in celebration of his recovery from a long period of mental illness.
J. M. W. Turner's "Pass of the Splügen" is now in a private collection.
John Edwardes Fowler was a prominent member of the Liverpool Ruskin Society and the Guild of St. George. He was involved in the Guild Settlement at Bewdley.
