Notes
Alfred Hunt, Margaret Hunt, John Simon and William Cowper-Temple organized a subscription for the purchase of J. M. W. Turner's watercolour "Pass of the Splügen" for John Ruskin in 1878. This tribute was in celebration of his recovery from a long period of mental illness.
J. M. W. Turner's "Pass of the Splügen" is now in a private collection.
Part of a large collection of letters to Joan Severn. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
The author indicates she is "Mrs. G.C. Rawlinson."
The salutation of the letter is "Dear Madam" indicating that it may have been addressed to Margaret Hunt or to Jane Simon, both of whom were accepting contributions.
This collection was part of Helen Gill Viljoen's large bequest of John Ruskin-related material (formerly MA 3451).
Written from "Lucastes / Hayward's Heath."
Year of writing inferred from contents of the letter; month of writing is most likely April or May.
