Alfred Hunt, Margaret Hunt, John Simon and William Cowper-Temple organized a subscription for the purchase of J. M. W. Turner's watercolour "Pass of the Splügen" for John Ruskin in 1878. This tribute was in celebration of his recovery from a long period of mental illness.
In a penciled notation on p. 4, Helen Gill Viljoen indicates that Ada Hartnell was one of the 32 original members of the Guild of St. George.
J. M. W. Turner's "Pass of the Splügen" is now in a private collection.
