Alfred Hunt, Margaret Hunt, John Simon and William Cowper-Temple organized a subscription for the purchase of J. M. W. Turner's watercolour "Pass of the Splügen" for John Ruskin in 1878. This tribute was in celebration of his recovery from a long period of mental illness.
Elizabeth Barnard was one of the original Companions of Ruskin's Guild of St. George and was listed in the first roll of 32 Companions in 1876.
J. M. W. Turner's "Pass of the Splügen" is now in a private collection.
