Part of a large collection of letters from Sir Walter Scott primarily to John Gibson. Items in the collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
Scott entered into negotiations with Dr. Douglas to purchase Newarthaugh (later Abbotsford) in 1811 and he arranged to take possession of the property on 15 May 1812. At the time of the purchase, the farm had only a five-room cottage and improvements were not begun until 1814.
