Notes
Part of a collection comprising 75 letters from Maria La Touche, consisting of six letters to John Ruskin, one letter to Ruskin's mother, Margaret Cock Ruskin and 68 letters to Joan Severn. Letters are largely undated, but were written from about 1861 to the 1890's. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
The letter is written on "Monday" and refers to it being All Saints Day; possible year of writing could be 1880 or 1886 as in both of those years, All Saints Day, November 1, fell on a Monday; Mrs. La Touche also refers to the "organised strike against the November rents" by the National [Land] League which might indicate that the year is 1886, a year in which rent strikes were common.
This collection was part of Helen Gill Viljoen's large bequest of John Ruskin-related material (formerly MA 3451).
Written on stationery embossed with her initials.
Provenance
Bequest of Helen Gill Viljoen in 1974.
Summary
Writing of her cousin's ill health and her stay with them at Harristown; writing of the rent strikes organised by the National [Land] League.
