Summary
Sending the letter by way of "a young cousin" (Alexander Pringle Russell, d. 1816) and asking that Carpenter "shew him any kindness or attention" if it falls in his way to do so; sending a copy of Marmion for Mrs. Carpenter and referencing her health; reporting that he has acquired a post as a Clerk of Session and discussing the political situation; saying that "the public has been also very favourable to me so that I have profited both in pecuniary respects & in general esteem by the literary reputation I have acquired," but noting that "this fortune has not been without some alloy" and referencing his younger brother (Tom's) entangled affairs.
