James Whistler sued Ruskin for libel in a trial that took place November 25-26, 1878; Burne-Jones, a friend of Ruskin and Whistler, was asked to testify in Ruskin's defense.

Part of a collection consisting of 64 letters from Sir Edward and Lady Georgiana Burne-Jones primarily to John Ruskin, Joan Severn, and their circle, dated ca. 1864 to 1918. Collection also contains copies of seven letters of Lady Burne-Jones to Ruskin from 1862, and three related envelopes. Letters in this collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.

Comparing himself to Nathaniel Winkle in his testimony during the Whistler trial; saying "they wouldn't ask me the questions I wanted them to ask....I was very nervous and it all felt dreadful--I wanted to say things about you and they gave me no chance....they wouldn't give me a chance to stand up for you."
