This illustration was executed, probably in North Brooklin, Maine, at the request and under the direction of E. B. White, who wished to show his publishers a mock up of his ideas for the dust jacket of The Trumpet of the Swan. This drawing by Hayes was closely followed by illustrator Edward Frascino.
This watercolor was enclosed in an undated letter from Hayes to E. B. White (MA 3851.38).
