With a penciled notation on p. 1 by Helen Gill Viljoen dating the letter to Feb. 20, 1881 and adding "Sunday evening [Feb. 20, 1881] Ruskin ill at Brantwood. In 1881 he became ill while the Severns were away and his Diary stopped abruptly after Feb. 19."
Written on stationery embossed "Herne Hill. / S.E."

Summary
Postponing a plan to visit her as she had just received a telegram from Brantwood saying that her cousin [ Ruskin] is ill and she must go to him immediately; adding that Ruskin's illness must be "very sudden as I had an excellent report of him yesterday."
